Although once the preserve of jurisdictions like the USA, a recent landmark Supreme Court ruling has given greater weight to pre-nuptial agreements in the English courts than ever before. The content of them is likely to be highly persuasive in many divorce cases, particularly short childless marriages.

A prenuptial agreement can allow you to “ring fence” certain assets, such as wealth generated before the marriage.

To be enforceable, they have to be preceded by  financial disclosure and independent legal advice  and the basic terms have to be realistic and fair. They would have to be reviewed in the event of any children of the marriage.
